WASHINGTON – Brianna Lore and Emma Buckles had two hits apiece, but a six-run fifth inning propelled George Washington to a 9-5 victory over Saint Louis Sunday afternoon in the rubber match of a three-game Atlantic 10 Conference series.
The Billikens (25-14, 9-5 A-10) got on the board first with three runs in the third inning. Lindsay Friedman walked with one out and stole second, and Elizabeth Everingham walked. Friedman scored when the George Washington shortstop booted Allie Macfarlane's ground ball, and Lore followed with a two-run double.
GW (20-17, 4-8) cut into the lead with two runs in the bottom of the third, but SLU re-established a three-run cushion with single markers in the fourth and fifth.
In the fourth, Buckles drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on Josie Knesel's sacrifice and scored on Friedman's single.
The fifth inning began with Lore's single. With two away, pinch runner Miranda Cotton swiped second and scored on Buckles' double.
However, the Colonials took an 8-5 lead in their half of the fifth and added an insurance run in the sixth.
Everingham and Nickel added a single apiece for the Billikens, who play a single game at SIUE Wednesday, April 15, at 4 p.m.
