Baseball Wins Both Games of Doubleheader for Series Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis baseball defeated Massachusetts 1-0 and 13-7 in two games of a double header to complete a series sweep of the Minutemen. Junior Josh Moore (4-1) got the win in game one while freshman Luke Sommerfeld (2-0) got the win in relief in game two. The win moves the Billikens up to 27-12 overall and 9-3 in Atlantic 10 games. Saint Louis has now won six consecutive games and nine of its last 11 contests.

In the first game, the Billikens relied on the left arm of Moore. The southpaw hurled eight shutout innings, scattering five hits, walking none and striking out six. Of the 112 pitches thrown, 79 were for strikes. Fellow lefty Brett Shimanovsky earned the save, throwing the ninth with one hit and a strikeout. As a staff, the Billikens did not walk a batter.

Saint Louis' lone run in game one came on a Danny Murphy RBI single in the fourth inning. Murphy led SLU at the plate, going 2-2 with a walk and an RBI.

If game one was a pitcher's duel, game two was a slugfest. Both teams scored four runs in the first three innings. In the fourth, the Billiken offense erupted for seven runs. UMass responded with three runs in the fifth. However, Saint Louis added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth for the 13-7 win.

Sommerfeld was strong in relief, throwing three scoreless innings with only one hit against him. He struck out four without allowing a walk.

At the plate, several Billikens had strong showings. Jake Henson was 3-4 with with two runs and an RBI. Braxton Martinez was 2-4 with a double, two runs and two RBIs. Murphy was 2-3 with a double, two runs and two RBIs. Parker Sniatynski was 2-5 with a run scored and a team-best three RBIs. In the first inning, with Sniatynski at first and Murphy at third, the Bills successfully pulled off a double steal, SLU's lone steals of the contest.

Next up for Saint Louis is a trip across the Mississippi for a mid-week game at SIU Edwardsville on April 22. First pitch against the Cougars is set for 6 p.m.
