ST. LOUIS – Maddie Baalman registered her 10th win of the season with the help of home runs from Allie Macfarlane and Brianna Lore as Saint Louis toppled SIUE, 7-2, Tuesday afternoon at the Billiken Sports Center.
The Billikens, who have won four straight and eight of their last nine, improved to 33-16. SIUE fell to 38-12.
Baalman (10-6), who struck out three, scattered seven hits and walked five but worked out of numerous jams. SIUE stranded 11 runners, including three in the second inning and two apiece in the fourth and sixth.
Saint Louis generated all the offense it would need in the first inning. Lindsay Friedman drew a one-out walk and stole second. Elizabeth Everingham hit a ball between third base and shortstop for an infield single, and Friedman scored when the shortstop's throw to first base got away. Macfarlane followed with her eight homer of the season for a 3-0 Billiken lead.
SIUE plated an unearned run in the second, but SLU gave Baalman some breathing room by scoring two runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth.
With one out and the bases empty in the fourth, Lore belted her fourth home run of the year. After Alyssa Tarquinio walked, pinch runner Madeline Brungardt moved to second on Hailey Weavers' sacrifice and scored on Emma Buckles' double to make it 5-1.
In the fifth, consecutive doubles by Alex Nickel and Friedman increased the lead to 6-1. Friedman advanced to third on a ground ball by Everingham and scored on Macfarlane's grounder for a 7-1 Billiken cushion.
SIUE tallied once in the seventh, but Baalman closed it out with a pair of infield popups.
