Box Score ST. LOUIS - Sophomore pitcher Zach Girrens (6-1) threw a complete game, the Billikens' first of the season, as Saint Louis topped VCU 3-2 at the Billiken Sports Center. The win was SLU's 30th of the season. It is the eighth 30-win season in Saint Louis history, and the sixth since head coach Darin Hendrickson took the reins in 2008.
Saint Louis is 30-16 overall and 11-6 in Atlantic 10 games.
Girrens allowed four hits in nine innings, two runs (both earned) and struck out six while walking one. This season, he has tallied a team-leading 68 strikeouts in (60.2 innings pitched) while walking 22. Opposing hitters are hitting .198 off Girrens.
The Billikens scored first on an RBI single to right from Alex King in the bottom of the second.
VCU tied the score at 1-1 in the top of the third.
Michael Bozarth, appearing in his first game since suffering an injury on April 8, gave SLU the lead in the fourth with his second home run of the season.
The Billikens grabbed an insurance run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Josh Bunselmeyer.
Saint Louis held a 3-1 lead entering the ninth. A solo home run from VCU was all the damage done as SLU captured the series with the 3-2 win.
The Billiken offense was firing on all cylinders with 14 hits against the Rams. Bozarth was the top hitter for SLU, finishing the game 3-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Danny Murphy, hitting leadoff, went 3-5 with a run scored. Murphy, Mike Vigliarolo and Jake Henson hit 1-2-3 for the Bills and went a combined 7-14 (.500 average) against VCU.
Saint Louis and VCU will conclude the three-game series tomorrow, May 3 at noon. Junior Josh Moore will get the start for SLU. Prior to first pitch, Saint Louis will honor the class of 2015 for Senior Day. Senior Day celebrations will begin at approximately 11:45.
