Box Score SAINT LOUIS – [BOX SCORE] A tough day at the plate against a talented Incarnate Word team led to a result that Saint Louis was not hoping for. The Cardinals posted five runs on five hits on Saturday in a 5-2 win over the Billikens.
Saint Louis (1-6) dropped its fifth in a row on Saturday as Incarnate Word came into the game with a win over Notre Dame on day one and a close 5-4 loss against Purdue on Friday evening. It was a team that proved it could hang with the big boys as the Cardinals picked-up their fourth win of 2018.
The bottom of the second was good to the Cardinals as Kyle Bergeron led-off with a single to get things started. A hit batsman and a single later, Incarnate Word grabbed a 1-0 lead and signaled a call to the bullpen for the Billikens. Luke Sommerfeld entered and allowed an RBI single to Samuel Gutierrez to extend the lead to 2-0.
Mark Whitehead followed with a one-out sacrifice fly, but a head's up play by James Morisano to get the runner at third ended the inning.
Incarnate Word added another in the fifth. Bergeron got his second hit of the game, this time a two-out RBI double down the left field line and the Cardinals grabbed what ended as an insurance run.
The Billikens did threaten in the bottom of the ninth with a pair of runs, however. Freshman Ben Livorsi delivered a double to right field and continued to display his hot bat in the early going. An error and an Aaron Case RBI double led to the two runs, but the Cardinals were able to close the door.
Alex King, James Morisano and Carter Hanford led the Billikens with a pair of hits each. On the mound, Luke Sommerfeld led Saint Louis with a great outing. The senior righty tossed five complete innings in relief and allowed just one run.
The Billikens will wrap-up the Alamo Irish Classic on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. when they take-on Incarnate Word in the consolation game.
