BATTLE-TESTED BILLIKENS GRAB WIN IN EDWARDSVILLE

Box Score

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - [BOX SCORE] Saint Louis University Baseball knew that Wednesday's midweek clash with Southern Illinois University Edwardsville would not be a walk in the park. The Cougars showed their resilience, but came-up just short as the Billikens went on to a 5-4 win.

Saint Louis (16-7, 3-0 A-10) put together a gritty effort under the lights on Wednesday as they extended their record win streak to 15 games. The streak tied the longest in NCAA Division I this season set by Auburn.

SIUE plated the game's first run after Eric Giltz doubled with one out in the bottom of the first. The Cougar center fielder ripped a ball down the right field line and snagged third moments later on a wild pitch to put a runner at third with one out. On the next at-bat, Peyton Cordova-Smith grounded-out to second, which scored Giltz to make it a 1-0 game.

Saint Louis picked-up its first hit and a lead in the top of the fifth. Nick Reeser led-off the inning with a double and started a big inning for the Billikens. New SIUE pitcher Devin Colley went on to load the bases after allowing a single to Cole Dubet and a walk to Ryan Hernandez to give the visitors a chance to put their first run on the board.

Alex King trekked to the plate with the bases loaded and one out and delivered a two-RBI single to left center field to give Saint Louis a 2-1 lead. Parker Sniatynski followed with two-RBI of his own, a double down the left field line, to extend the lead to 4-1.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Cougars began things with a big hit. Garrett Carmichael tripled to lead-off the inning and set the tone. Jordan Ross singled-in the first of three runs home in the inning as SIUE tied the game at four.

Saint Louis took the lead in the top of the seventh thanks to a big hit from the cleanup batter. Jake Garella smacked a single to left field on a 1-1 pitch to give the Billikens the lead for good.

The Billikens sent six pitchers to the mound on Wednesday as Sean Frontzak grabbed his first win of the season. The junior from Naperville, Ill., did not allow a single earned run, the 10th outing that he has not allowed an earned run this season.

Nick Logusch was equally impressive in his four-out appearance. The freshman righty struck-out three of the four batters he faced as Ryan Lefner recorded his sixth save of the season.

The win sets-up what is surely the most anticipated mid-major baseball matchup of the season as the two hottest teams in college baseball are set for a showdown in Saint Louis. The Billikens will welcome the Virginia Commonwealth University Rams, winners of their last 13-straight, to the Billiken Sports Center for a three-game set. VCU is coming off a lopsided 11-3 win over Virginia on Wednesday evening.

First pitch is set for Friday at 6:00 p.m.
