PESKY REDHAWK BATS OUT-DUEL BILLIKENS

Box Score

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – [BOX SCORE] A see-saw battle ensued on Tuesday, but the Billikens were unable to keep the Redhawks off the board. Saint Louis University Baseball allowed 10 runs on 10 hits as they fell to Southeast Missouri State, 10-8.

Saint Louis (25-10, 11-1 A-10) jumped-out to a lead early in the game as Aaron Case recorded the first hit on the first pitch. The Billiken center fielder dropped a base knock into left-center field to put the lead runner aboard.

Case advanced to second on a fly out, and after a strikeout to Parker Sniatynski, Jake Garella had a chance to put the first run on the board. The right fielder drove a 1-2 pitch to right, which scored the Saint Louis center fielder, and made it a 1-0 game.

Southeast grabbed its first run in the bottom of the second. With one out, Justin Dirden singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch to put a runner in scoring position. Alex Canty followed with two outs on the board with an RBI single to right to tie things at one apiece.

The Redhawks took their first lead in the game with a one-out RBI single in the third before the Billikens went back to work in the fourth. James Morisano got in on the action after Carter Hanford drew a one-out walk. The Saint Louis backstop powered his fifth home run of the season over the wall in left-center to give the visitors a 3-2 lead.

Southeast regained its advantage in the bottom of the fourth. Saint Louis surrendered a walk and a double to lead-off the fourth as the pace slowed to a crawl. A ground-out to second from Alex Nielson plated the first run before a costly error at first gave the home team the lead.

The Redhawks continued to pressure the Billiken bullpen in the bottom of the sixth. Trevor Ezell sent a low liner past the pitcher up the middle to score Nielson before a bases-loaded walk made it a 6-3 lead.

Alex King made it a one run ball game shortly after.

In the top of the seventh with two outs, King came to the plate and delivered a big blow to the Redhawks. The shortstop crushed his eighth home run of the season to left-center field to cut the Billiken deficit to 6-5.

Parker Sniatynski followed with a high pop-up to shallow center field, and due to some confusion in the outfield, the ball dropped-in for a double to put the tying run at second and Garella at the plate. With a 1-1 count, the Edwardsville, Ill., native was hit by a pitch to put another runner aboard for Carter Hanford.

The former Pattonville Pirate lined a double down the left field line, which scored Sniatynski from second and tied the game with runners at second and third.

The Redhawks went to the bullpen and called upon Ryan Losman to face the reigning Atlantic 10 Player of the Week Nick Reeser. The Billiken first baseman got the best of the battle, however.

On a 1-1 offering, Reeser drove a two-RBI single to right-center field, which scored a pair and gave the Billikens an 8-6 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, however, the Redhawks capitalized on a leadoff hit batsman, an error, a wild pitch and an infield hit. Southeast plated four runs in the inning as the Billikens saw their two-run lead evaporate into a two-run deficit.

Saint Louis went down in order in the eighth and were unable to rally in the ninth as the Redhawks defeated the Billikens for the second time in 2018.

The Billikens will have a quick turnaround on Wednesday as they will play their second-consecutive Ohio Valley Conference opponent in SIUE. First pitch in Edwardsville, Ill., is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
