POWER BATS NOT ENOUGH FOR BILLIKENS

Box Score

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – [BOX SCORE] On a night that senior Kyle Fletcher hit his first career home run, the Billikens were unable to hold the lead. Both Fletcher and Parker Sniatynski homered for Saint Louis, but dropped a tough one to SIUE on Wednesday, 7-6.

Saint Louis (25-11, 11-1 A-10) dealt with windy conditions as no fly ball was a guaranteed out. Aaron Case led-off with a double that seemed to be an easy popup in right center, but the wind played tricks on the ball as it dropped-in for a double. The same happened for the Cougars in the bottom of the first, but both weathered the issues to keep the game scoreless through one.

The game remained tied at zero until the fourth inning. Edwardsville's native son Jake Garella singled to lead-off the inning before Carter Hanford was hit with a pitch to put a pair of runners on with no outs.

Cole Dubet batted both batters up to second and third on a sacrifice bunt to put Kyle Fletcher at the plate with a chance to get the Billikens on the board. He did much more than that.

Fletcher, the senior from Wentzville, Mo., clubbed his first career home run to right field and gave the Billikens a 3-0 lead.

In the fifth, Parker Sniatynski provided three more runs with one swing. The left fielder hit his fourth home run of the season to nearly the same spot as Fletcher an inning prior to make it a 6-0 lead for the visitors.

SIUE fired back in the bottom of the sixth. Aaron Jackson began a big inning for the Cougars with his first career home run to put the first run on the board for the home team.

A pair of walks and a hit batsman loaded the bases for Brock Weimer, who plated two more. The junior hit a two-RBI double to right center to cut the lead in half at 6-3.

Just two batters later, with two away, a throwing error allowed two runs to score before Brock Hammit tied the game. The Cougar left fielder doubled down the left field line, which scored the tying run, and made it a 6-6 game.

In the seventh, SIUE grabbed the lead. A pair of hit batsmen to lead-off the inning came back to haunt the Billikens. A sacrifice bunt put both runners in scoring position before Weimer hit an RBI ground out to put the Cougars up for good.

Sniatynski went 2-4 with three RBI while Garella impressed in front of his home town. The sophomore also went 2-4 in the game. The Billiken sophomore is now 4-10 in his career at the Simmons Complex.

The Billikens will now head home with a tough home series against Jacksonville. The Dolphins will enter play over the weekend after having handed No. 1-ranked Florida a definitive 8-4 loss on Tuesday. First pitch on Friday is set for 6:00 p.m. at the Billiken Sports Center.
