BILLIKENS FALL SHORT IN EXTRAS

Box Score

SAINT LOUIS - [BOX SCORE] Saint Louis University Baseball grabbed a late lead, but was unable to hold it in the ninth. Jacksonville recorded a run in both the ninth and 10th innings as the Dolphins rallied for a 3-2, 10-inning win on Friday night.

Saint Louis (25-12, 11-1 A-10) grabbed the lead in the first inning for the 16th time in 2018 thanks in part to a one out base hit from Alex King. The senior placed the first hit of the game into left center field to put the lead run on base.

King followed with a stolen base, and thanks to a wild throw by catcher Franco Guardascione, advanced to third with Jake Garella heading to the plate. The talented sophomore, put the Billikens on the board with a double down the right field line to make it a 1-0 game.

Jacksonville tied the game in the top of the second. Angel Camacho took a 2-2 pitch in the arm to put the leadoff batter aboard. A single and a pair of fly outs plated the first run of the game for the Dolphins to tie it at one.

The game remained tied at one until the bottom of the eighth as Miller Hogan tossed a great game with an incredible finish. The junior allowed the bases loaded in the top of the seventh with no outs, but got a pop out to right field and finished the inning with a pair of strikeouts.

Hogan finished the night with seven innings pitched and allowed just one run on three hits with seven strikeouts to his credit.

Saint Louis posted the lead run on the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth thanks to an RBI single up the middle from Parker Sniatynski, but Jacksonville responded in the top of the ninth. The Dolphins took advantage of a walk and a wild pitch in the inning before Sam Armstrong doubled the tying run in.

The game extended to extra innings for the first time in 2018 for the Billikens, but the Dolphins gained the lead with two outs in the inning. Scott Dubrule singled to right field, which scored Ruben Someillan and put Jacksonville up for good.

The Billikens made it interesting in the bottom of the 10th, however. James Morisano led-off with a single, and after Kyle Fletcher laid down a perfect bunt for a single, Aaron Case walked to load the bases. This was, however, as far as the comeback got. Jacksonville closer Chris Mauloni recorded his 15th save of the season with a trio of strikeouts to end the game.

Fletcher led the Billikens at the plate with a two-hit game. The senior went 2-4 in the game as the designated hitter.

Saint Louis will try to even the series on Saturday as Jackson Wark will put his 7-1 record on the line. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at the Billiken Sports Center.
