CHICAGO – Both Saint Louis swimming and diving teams finished second at the 12th annual Phoenix Fall Classic, hosted by the University of Chicago Nov. 19-21.
The Billiken women placed second among five teams, while the Billiken men were runners-up among six squads.
Saint Louis won 11 events in the women's competition, with double winners
Natalie Daniel and
Emily Leonard leading the way. Daniel touched first in the 50 free (23.88) and 100 free (51.08), while Leonard was victorious in the 500 free (4:57.54) and 1650 free (17:01.02).
Billiken swimmers captured both individual medley events.
Tessa Horan won the 200 IM (2:05.95), while
Claire Koh claimed the 400 IM (4:30.20).
Bri Hodgkins won the 100 fly (56.81), and
Emily Smith topped the field in the 100 back (55.55).
The SLU women brought home three relay victories. Smith,
Carly McKeon,
Pola Luckiewicz and Daniel won the 200 free relay (1:35.64), while Daniel, McKeon,
Sophie Kishish and Leonard comprised the winning quartet in the 400 free relay (3:28.06) and 800 free relay (7:33.41).
In the 400 medley relay, Daniel swam the anchor leg in 50.36 to break Elaine Mahon's 100 free split school record.
Four runner-up performances and three third-place finishes highlighted the meet for the Billiken men.
Saint Louis competitors placed second and third in two events.
Jack Locke (16:08.23) and
Danny Hinkle (16:32.19) were second and third, respectively, in the 1650 free.
Daniel Verdico (2:02.55) was second and
Philip Costello (2:04.64) was third in the 200 breast.
Janssen Gamilla turned in a second-place effort in the 100 fly (48.82) and claimed third place in the 200 fly (1:51.63).
Preston Waldusky finished second in the 400 IM (4:01.87).
