St. Louis, Mo. -
Saint Louis fought a good fight against a polished Indiana team taking a 4-2 loss in its first match at home at the friendly confines of the Anheuser-Busch Center in Fenton, Mo.
The Hoosiers outshot and outcornered the Billikens in the first half 8-3 and 8-0, respectively.
Indiana began the scoring with Kayla Bashore finding the net with 28:28 remaining on the first half clock. A second goal was added by Nikki Orciuch at 14:48 with an assist by Lesley Wiler.
The Bills returned the favor when Carin Boone, assisted by Marissa Lynn, scored with 10:30 on the clock. But, Indiana made one more attempt with just 31 seconds remaining with Wiler netting the ball, assisted by Jodi Murphy.
The intensity was turned up by both teams with Ellen Rapp flying through the crowded field and making herself available for a key pass from senior Alisa Hebert on a penalty corner. Rapp found the back of the net with 25:02 remaining in the match. With the clock reading 20:55 left in the match, Indiana's Lydia Schrott scored an unassisted goal to close out the scoring.
"I think we need to work defensively to clean some things up," said head coach Maria Whitehead. "The forward line passing combinations were good, and we need to give up less corners, but as a team, we worked well and hard. I have to give kudos to the Hoosiers and head coach Amy Robertson on a well executed match. All in all, it was great to play at home; it was like heaven for us."
Next up for the Bills will be yet another road match, their ninth of the year, where they will visit the SMS bears in Springfield, Mo., on Sun., Oct. 5, at Noon.
