Billikens Deliver in Extra Innings

ST. LOUIS - The Saint Louis baseball team extended their winning streak to nine games in a thrilling, 3-2, 10 inning win against UT-Martin. The Bills are now 15-5 on the season.

The Skyhawks jumped out to an early lead, scoring runs in the second and third innings. The Bills could not answer until the sixth when senior Connor Gandossy hit a bloop single behind first base, driving in freshman Mike Vigliarolo. He later scored the tying run when senior Marco DiRoma drew a bases loaded walk.

The Billikens threatened in the bottom of the ninth when DiRoma ripped a triple to the left field corner. Junior Alex Kelly was given an intentional walk and was allowed to advance on catcher's indifference. With runners on second and first with no outs, SLU was primed to score. However, the UTM pitching kncukled down and ended the threat.

In the tenth, Saint Louis opened up the offense. Sophomore Danny Brennan hustled out an infield single to the shortstop. Gandossy sacrificed the speedster to scoring position for the first out. Freshmen Alec Sole drew a walk, as did junior Mike Levine. With the bases juiced and one out, DiRoma came to the plate. He hit a gronder to second. The second basemen made the turn and got Levine at second and on the throw to first, DiRoma beat out the throw by a few steps, winning the ballgame for the home team.

Senior Travis Parker gets the win, and sophomore Clay Smith had a strong start, going 6.2 IP, with four hits, two earned runs and six strikeouts to only one walk.

The Bills are now 1-1 in extra inning games. Next up for SLU is a trip to Macomb, Ill. on Tues., Mar. 20, to take on the Leathernecks of Western Illinois. SLU beat WIU on Friday by a score of 6-2.
